Monte Grappa Memorial in Italian Garden Mayors of Cleveland Ohio and Vicenza Italy
April 8, 2011
Mayor Achille Variati led a diplomatic delegation of city officials from Vicenza, Italy to visit a memorial in the Italian Cultural Garden in Cleveland Ohio. Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson and City Councilman Jeff Johnson represented the city of Cleveland
Despite torrential rains, the delegations paid their respects at the Monte Grappa Memorial in the Italian Garden. Mayor Variati said, "The weather is not so good but the emotion is strong." The Memorial was sent by the government of Italy in 1932 to honor the Ohio Italian American WWI veterans that fought in Vicenza.
Vicenza, Italy is a sister city to Cleveland and has a duplicate memorial honoring the Ohio veterans. Mayor Variati told how the rock came from a "sacred" mountain in Italy and said "Shame on people that forget."
