World Bee Day with Consul General Alenka Jerak Cleveland May 20, 2020
Cleveland is fortunate to have a Consul General office. It is the only official (non-honorary) Consulate in the state of Ohio. Consul General Alenka Jerak has been an outstanding connection between Cleveland and Slovenia.
Slovenia has been at the forefront of protecting bees, which are essential to our food supply and health. She led the celebration of World Bee Day (May 20) in order to point out the importance of the bees and other pollinators, beekeeping and their contribution to sustainable development, environment, healthy food, solving problems related to the global food supply as well as to eliminate hunger.
She says: "Slovenians are passionate beekeepers and Slovenia really is the land of beekeepers, who are respected members of the society, known for their professionalism, advanced beekeeping technologies and unique features, such as painted beehive panels, bee houses and traditional beehives.
Slovenians live with bees and for the bees and ranks among the best in the world regarding the number of beekeepers per capita - 1 in 200 Slovenians is a beekeeper and contribute to the production of around 2. 000 tonnes of honey per year. Bee, especially the indigenous Carniolan honey bee (Apis mellifera carnica) is the second most widespread subspecies in the world, and represents the part of the Slovenian national identity."
