St. Michael the Archangel Church 3114 Scranton Rd. April 18, 2025
St. Michael the Archangel Church is located on the corner of Scranton and Clark Ave. in an Hispanic neighborhood of Cleveland.
The cornerstone of the church was set in 1889 to primarily serve the large German population. After a fire, the new church was completed in 1892. It is of High Victorian Gothic architecture and was said to be the tallest edifice in Cleveland until 1922. It is said to still be Cleveland's tallest church. The German population gradually dwindled and the Hispanic population grew. The first Spanish Mass was said there in 1971 and most Masses are now bilingual (English and Spanish).
Each year there is a Good Friday procession visiting 3 neighborhood churches: St. Michael the Archangel Church at the corner of Scranton Rd. and Clark Ave. St. Colman Church at 2027 West 65th Street and La Sagrida Famila Church at 7719 Detroit Ave. where they marched over the colorful, sawdust carpets known as the Carpets of Holy Week or Alfombras de Semana Santa in Spanish.
Here is a video of the church. I started outside to show the huge spires and the archangel statues in the center. Then I walk through the inside. It was just before a service so it was not lit up well and I didn't want to disturb people.
Here are some pictures of outside the Church. I think the claims that it is the tallest Church in Cleveland are true.

Here are some pictures of inside the Church. There are so many statues and features.
