Kwan Family Lion Dance Lunar New Year Celebration Asia Plaza - 30th and Payne, Cleveland February 1 and 2, 2025
There was a two-day celebration of Lunar New Year 2025 - the Year of the Wood Snake - at Asia Plaza. There were performances, information booths, vendors, community resources, photo opps and, of course, food!
A highlight is always the performances of the Kwan Family Lion Dance.
Wayne Wong served as the Master of Ceremonies at the Lunar New Year celebration at Asia Plaza. He explained both the Lion Dance and the Dragon Dance. He told of how the color red is considered lucky in Chinese culture and about the red envelopes. Also how the lion will eat and scatter lettuce hanging from store fronts and maybe toss oranges, symbolizing gold, to the kids. Watch.
This is a very busy time for the Kwan Family Lion Dance team and the good fortune they bring. Restaurants and stores in Asia Plaza hung lettuce and a red envelope in front of their place. When the lion arrived he would climb up and eat the lettuce and scatter it and perform a ritual for good luck in the New Year. Then the lion would move on to the next place. Watch the video below and then some pictures.

On both days, the Kwan Family Lion Dance team also performed at the main central stage. This is part of their performance in the center of Asia Plaza followed by a serious and then a funny group photo with Wayne, Lisa and Alex Wong.
Whether you say Gong hei faat choy (Cantonese) or xin nian kuai le (Mandarin) or something else, we wish you a Happy Lunar New Year.
