Bertie Ahern served as Taoiseach (Prime Minister) of Ireland from 1997 to 2008. He was instrumental in crafting the Good Friday Agreement along with President Bill Clinton, Tony Blair and others.
He was in the region to accept the AOH Sean MacBride Humanitarian Award, which is granted to those who have dedicated themselves to human rights issues. It was sponsored by the Ancient Order of Hibernians and the Youngstown State University Department of History. Before flying out, the taoiseach spent some time at a reception in Cleveland and we were invited to meet and greet this historical figure by John Myers.
