In 2024, the local Scottish communities gathered in the Scottish Cultural Garden to celebrate Scottish Tartan Day. In 2025 they celebrated at a different venue. Wade Mitchell reports, "On April 5 members of the Scottish Heritage Association of NE Ohio, the Ohio Scottish American Society, and the Scottish Cultural Garden Society gathered at the Cleveland Public Library to celebrate National Tartan Day with a tour of the Library's extensive collection of books, objects, and artifacts related to Scotland and things Scottish. Tartan Day is a recognition of the contributions of Scots and those of Scottish descent to the United States and the world. Over 25 Million Americans have Scottish roots, and Scotland is deeply embedded in Cleveland's history. The event was cosponsored by the Ohio Center for the Book, a part of the Cleveland Public Library."
Tartan Day is celebrated in the U.S. and around the world each year on April 6, the anniversary in 1320 of the Declaration of Abroath. The Declaration of Arbroath is Scotland's Declaration of Independence. Defying attempts by England to subjugate their nation, the nobles and lords of Scotland gathered April 6, 1320, and declared once and for all that only Scots had the right to choose Scotland's king. The Declaration was the first statement of national self-determination in Western history. The signers vowed that under no circumstances would they become vassals of the English, and concluded with the immortal words, "In truth, we fight not for honors, nor riches, no glory, but only for Freedom, that which no good man gives up with his life."
